Worries on Trial
What could happen vs. what will probably happen
We can get bogged down by worries about what could happen. Day in and day out, life is full of surprises and the unexpected and if we are not careful, we can get overwhelmed with worries. The fear of what could happen can drive us to try to control any and every possible outcome to a problem (or imagined problem). The more we fear possible outcomes, the more we try to think on and control those outcomes. This creates a vicious cycle. When we try to control, it only makes us worry more. The desire to control validates those worries and makes us worry more instead of actually solving anything.
Take a deep breath and use this simple method to change your worries and take back control of your life. Each evening before bed, unwind and think through your day and any worries that are weighing you down. You can use this worksheet to work through your worries by listing them out and then spelling out what could happen vs. what will probably happen. By spelling out our little “proofs” that worries will or won’t come true, we start to see more clearly what will actually happen. This puts worries in their place and can help you to feel like you are managing your worries instead of being carried away by them.
